    The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration became a reality in October of NOAA was tasked with the responsibility to predict changes in the oceans, atmosphere and living marine resources. The data gathered by NOAA would be shared by other government agencies, the research community, private industry and the general public. The following update provides the status of NOAA’s fleet of ships and aircraft, which play a critical role in the collection of oceanographic, atmospheric, hydrographic, and fisheries data. NOAA’s current fleet of 16 ships – the largest civilian research and survey fleet in the world – and nine aircraft, are operated.
